Shopify break-even revenue: what your store actually needs to sell

How Shopify merchants can translate fixed costs and contribution margin into a monthly revenue target that actually means something.

Break-even revenue gives a merchant a practical operating target: the approximate level of sales required to cover the cost structure before operating profit begins.

Break-even is more useful when expressed in revenue

For a multi-product e-commerce store, unit break-even can become cumbersome because products have different prices and margins. A revenue-based break-even view can be more practical for monthly planning.

The basic relationship is straightforward: fixed operating costs divided by the contribution margin ratio produces an estimated break-even revenue level. If monthly fixed operating costs are $40,000 and the store produces a 25% contribution margin, the illustrative break-even level is $160,000 of monthly revenue.

The denominator is where the work happens

The calculation is only as useful as the contribution margin behind it. Merchants should avoid treating gross margin as contribution margin when meaningful variable costs sit below COGS.

Fulfillment, shipping subsidies, transaction fees, variable commissions, and paid marketing can materially change how much of each sales dollar is actually available to cover fixed costs.

  • Start with net sales, not headline gross order value
  • Separate costs that change with sales from fixed operating expenses
  • Use a realistic blended contribution margin for the period
  • Recalculate when pricing, product mix, fulfillment, or acquisition economics change

Use break-even as a decision threshold

A break-even target becomes useful when it changes behavior. It can frame whether a hiring decision is affordable, whether a promotion needs more volume than expected, whether a marketing budget can increase, or whether a cost reduction meaningfully lowers the revenue hurdle.

The number should not be treated as a permanent truth. It is a planning target that moves with the economics of the business.

Questions worth answering

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate break-even sales revenue?

A common approach is fixed costs divided by the contribution margin ratio. The result is the approximate revenue required to cover both variable and fixed costs.

Should marketing be included in break-even?

If marketing spend scales with revenue or is treated as a variable acquisition cost, it should be reflected in contribution economics. Fixed brand or team costs may instead sit in operating expenses.

Is break-even the same as cash flow?

No. Break-even is an income-statement concept. Inventory timing, payment terms, financing, taxes, and other cash movements can make cash flow different from operating profit.
